Do I really need to Cleanse, Tone and Moisturise?

The 3-step rule of Cleansing, Toning and Moisturising is one that many customers take as gospel. But is it all really necessary?

While regular cleansing and moisturising are definite essentials, the benefits of toning are questionable and depend on the product you're using.

Here are my top tips for a quick and easy daily beauty regime.

Complete Cleansing
Throughout the day, residual impurities, dead skin cells and excess make-up build up in the crevices of the face.

If left, this build-up blocks pores and causes blemishes.

Our Camellia & Rose Gentle Hydrating Cleanser clears these impurities without stripping the skin’s natural oils. Use once a day but make sure it’s in the evenings – as this allows the skin to breathe and best perform its regenerative processes while we sleep.

Matched Moisturising
Though most know the difference regular moisturising can make, few people recognise the importance of matching your moisturiser to your skin type.

For example, combination skin requires balancing active ingredients, while dry skin needs intensive hydrating and nourishing agents.

Whatever your skin type, make sure your moisturiser contains Omega-rich oils – these essential fatty acids help keep skin smooth, supple and conditioned.

Unless your skin is particularly dry, only moisturise once a day in the mornings. This way you allow your skin to re-balance naturally overnight.

Think Twice about Toners
As a sensitive skin expert I am sceptical of alcohol-based toners. These have an astringent, pore-tightening effect but alcohol (even 100% natural ones) is an irritant that dries out the skin and strips our all-important natural oils.

Organic floral waters (e.g. rose water) are kinder on the skin but make sure you buy one made from a distillation as this extraction method retains the properties of the plant.

Many floral waters on the market are just water with essential oils added – which are a bit of a cheat and next to useless!  The way to spot them is to look at the Latin (or INCI) name.  True floral waters will be listed as one ingredient e.g. rosa damascena distillate, or rosa damascena water. Whereas water and essential oil blends will be written as two separate ingredients e.g. aqua, rosa damascena oil.
